Afternoon Tea at My Cup of Tea Dessert, Richmond Hill

Eeks sorry for this super late post! Life with a toddler is a handful to say the least and it has taken me a long time to organize my pictures and thoughts but now I have! 🙂 Please pardon yet another picture heavy review but this is a throwback to two wonderful afternoon tea experiences at My Cup of Tea Dessert, both so great that I’ve gone back twice and currently planning a future visit with Joseph!

My Cup of Tea Dessert stands out for their attentiveness to detail and dedication to their craft which in turn translates into an elevated experience for the customer. A lot of thought goes into planning the menu which I’ve seen first hand from the chef, and the fact that the food selection changes every two months keeps me coming back for more. No doubt I’m looking forward to the summer theme already!

Below is a collection of pictures from two separate visits, one during Easter in April and another during Mother’s Day in May. Both are good examples of what you’ll get if you order tea for one (Easter pics) versus tea for two (Mother’s Day pics). For example, if you order tea for two then your food will arrive in these gorgeous retro bird cages. And if you order tea for one then they will be displayed on an elegant 4-tiered stand, but no cage. Pricing is $28 per person, which is fair compared to other afternoon tea venues.

By the time I post this on the blog the menu will have changed but my intention is to showcase the creativity involved with the food so I’m going ahead anyway. Since so much time has passed I honestly don’t remember the details of what I ate so I will also let these pictures do the talking 😛 . What I do recall is that everything was delicious and made in-house except for the custom handmade chocolates. Also, the chef freshly prepares the desserts the night before so it’s important to call ahead for reservations because trust me, you wouldn’t want to miss out. 😉

Although the afternoon tea menu is fixed you still have the option to select your choice of tea. Use the tablet to browse through the menu for more detailed descriptions.

I chose a strawberry kiwi fruit tea (caffeine-free)

If you prefer your tea with honey then be sure to request it on the side. It even comes with an adorable silver spoon! 🙂

Mother’s Day tea set: mango mousse and buttercream roses

Mother’s Day tea set: Red bean daifuku

Mother’s Day tea set: 70% dark chocolate high heel

Easter tea set: macha cheese cake, lychee jasmine jelly, earl grey mousse

Easter tea set: garlic cheese mushroom stuffed bread, mini garlic bread grilled cheese sandwich, and mini tuna sandwich

These warm sandwiches were a welcomed change from the traditional cold finger sandwiches of English tea. The garlic cheese mushroom stuffed bread was a huge savoury hit!

My Cup of Tea Dessert is a well-lit and modern space that can comfortably accommodate approximately 20-25 guests. It is situated in Richmond Hill with a good amount of parking spots but these tend to fill up quickly with guests of neighbouring restaurants, so be forewarned that finding parking might become an issue. Another issue that I encountered was not finding the exact location via GPS (I was led further along Hwy 7 than I should have), so my tip to you is to look for the Yoga Tree plaza at Chalmers Rd along Hwy 7 and you’re there! Service level was pleasant and attentive but at times felt understaffed because there was only one server at any given time. Nevertheless I didn’t encounter any issues and thoroughly enjoyed my experiences.

Overall the food quality and presentation was great. The desserts weren’t overly sweet, which I really appreciate. You could tell the scones were freshly baked but I would’ve liked to see buttery clotted cream/ devonshire cream in place of whipped cream, which I think would’ve complimented the scones even more. Hey, perhaps on an upcoming menu? We’ll just have to wait and see. Go check ’em out! 😉

Cheers,

Melissa 🙂
